On Sunday 10th September, Spain’s capital, Madrid will play host to the second edition of the Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta with a 15-lap course starting at 2.15pm CET. The 87km race will conclude the UCI Women’s World Tour for 2017.
The Madrid Challenge will be the 5th round of the UCI Women’s World Tour that Team WNT Pro Cycling has raced in this year and will complete our first year of being a UCI professional team.
Finishing the 2017 season where it started, in Spain, firstly for our team launch in Madrid, before heading to our team training camp in Cambrils and where we took to the start in our first UCI stage race, Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, and in doing so, took our first UCI win, with Lydia Boylan soloing to victory on the final stage. Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta will book-end a successful season for Team WNT Pro Cycling.
Our 5-rider team will be made up of Olympic Champion, Katie Archibald, former British criterium champion, Eileen Roe, newly crowned Yorkshire road race champion, Gabriella Shaw, former junior world team pursuit champion, Hayley Jones and super-domestique Becca Carter.
‘We’ve chosen a strong-well rounded team, and we have different options to play throughout the race. With it being a kermesse-like course at 5.8km per lap, it could be a race to suit Eileen Roe with the three hair-pin turns per lap, and Eileen’s tactical ability’ says DS Graeme Herd.
Team sponsor, WNT, will be the official partner for the Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta for the next four years until 2020, with their Spanish head-quarters based nearby in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid). With WNT supporting the race for the next four years, it shows WNT’s commitment to women’s cycling for the long term.
